Known as Rapid Robert, Bob Feller (HOF) of the Cleveland Indians during the late 1930's thru 1940's was considered to be and is still considered to be one of baseball's all time great pitchers. He was known for his blazing fast ball and impressive strikeout record. Who knows what he would have accomplished in his career if he had not taken time off to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II? Feller served as Gun Captain aboard the USS Alabama, and missed four seasons during his service in World War II, being decorated with five campaign ribbons and eight battle stars.
We are offering a wonderful scrap book that is filled with photos and clippings from the beginning of Fellers career in 1937 and 1938. Many of the items relate to him finishing high school and leaving his Iowa home. This item actually consists of two scrap books that have been attached to each other. The first is labeled as volume 1 and contains 60 hand-numbered pages. The second labeled as volume 2 contains 100 hand-numbered pages. The condition is as one would expect for a scrapbook of old paper clippings and photos. There is lots of yellowing of the paper and it is somewhat fragile. Several pages have broken loose from the scrapbook binding, but they are present and in place. This was clearly a labor of love for somebody to put together and is a joy to look at now. There is one name associated with who put the books together, but they appear to be possibly the work of several individuals. It is unlikely that you will ever find such a comprehensive set of items about the early career of such a great player, as what you see here. This is a remarkable collection and should sit proudly on the shelf of a devoted Cleveland Indians fan. Oh, yes, Feller's first contract at the age of 17 was for $10,000. What would that be worth today?
