People have been requesting a larger version of our traditionally crafted round cherry tines. In response, we are now offering a larger version of our round tines. Hand crafted in the woodworking shop at Sweetpea Cottage, this classic bent wood box is a unique item reflecting the simplicity of fine folk art, made in the traditional manner of the Norwegian tine, or tina (pronounced tee-na). It can stand as a piece of art on its own, or it would make an excellent conversation piece, storage box for desk detritus, or jewelry box. Our tines have even been used as the final resting place for the ashes of very special pets. If you know somebody of Scandinavian heritage, this would be a great nostalgia gift. SEE OUR "FAVORITE LINKS" FOR INFORMATION ABOUT TINES. For years now, the tines made by Ken Drews in the workshop at Sweetpea Cottage have been eagerly sought by discriminating collectors of fine artisan wood items.
Like a piece of fine furniture, this is an elegantly styled bent wood box that has beautiful, graceful lines and rich color. It is entirely constructed with Pennsylvania black cherry emphasizing the beautiful grain and color of the wood. The wood is carefully steam bent and fastened together with split lacing in the style used by early Norwegian craftsmen. The cherry is a rich reddish-brown that will continue to darken with age. The corner posts are cut in a graceful arching wing style that is reminiscent of a Viking helmet with added texturing. The notched lid provides additional interest along with the lacing that is set in a textured band. The handle reinforces the winged theme of the corner posts held together with a textured band. The lid snaps down tightly onto the corner posts, giving this type of box the nickname "snap box." It is a beautiful interpretation of the traditional Norwegian, Swedish, or Scandinavian tine, or could even serve as a bride's box.
The box is round measuring about 6 3/4 inches in diameter. It stands 4 inches tall and the total height to the tips of the corner posts is 6 1/2 inches. The diameter of the lid is a bit larger measuring about 7 1/4 inches in diameter. The wood has not been stained but is being allowed to develop the natural color of aged cherry. It is coated with several layers of polyurethane oil to deepen and enrich the color and protect the wood. It has a final coat of a high quality conservator's wax. The box is well on its way to developing the classic cherry patina that is so sought after and the higher than normal amount of carving on the box adds a special dimension to this beautiful piece.
