Here is an opportunity to obtain an unusual Victorian decorative piece that would look great hanging on your parlor wall. It is constructed of hand-carved walnut in a vine-leaf design. The walnut serves as the backing board for a reinforced piece of tapestry that could serve as a wall pocket. We imagine that it was intended for holding a dried bouquet of flowers although it has been suggested to us that it could also have been used to hold knitting materials or letters. Overall the piece measures 22 inches long and about 13 ½ inches wide from left to right. The reinforced piece of tapestry sits in a cone shape open on both the top and bottom, and has been tacked to the backing board. Hanging on each side of the tapestry at the top there are two fabric decorative dangles. In the middle of the tapestry there appears to be a letter in Gothic script, possibly the letter "F". The general condition is good and consistent with its age. One of the tacks used to attach the tapestry to the walnut is missing, but it has not jeopardized the integrity of the piece nor is it highly noticeable. The velour piping around the edge of the tapestry is worn through showing the under-layment. There are a small number of spots that might be insect damage on the tapestry. There are some streaks of darker brown in the field of the tapestry but they might be deliberate done as part of the artistic effect. The dangles also show wear. There is also a very early repair to the walnut where it split at one time. The piece was well repaired, however, and the repair can barely be seen. An impressed stamped "52" is in the back of the piece. This is consistent with decorative walnut items that were made in a small home industry in Indiana during the late Victorian era and probably represents an inventory stock number.
