Poker Decorated Norwegian Tine, Bergen, Dated 1889

We continue to beat the bushes looking for quality Norwegian bentwood boxes, or tines, to satisfy the needs of our continually growing collector base. This time we are offering you a wonderful dated and poker-decorated box from Bergen, Norway. It measure 6 1/4 inches long, by 3 ½ inches wide, by 3 inches tall with the vertical end posts providing a height of 4 ½ inches. We have had several boxes of this type over the years all made by the same individual, usually round, some were dated and some indicated that they were made in Bergen, Norway. We suspect that many of them were picked up by emigrants as they left Norway for new homes in North America.

This box is beautifully made from solid wood using the traditional methods of construction. It is made from straight-grained fir and pine, and has the traditional birch root lacing which is remarkably still all intact. It has all been carefully decorated with heated poker work to burn in a design (pyrography) along with the hand-carved date "1889". Finally, it is covered with a thin layer of varnish. The condition is quite good. The base is firmly attached with no signs of weakening due to wood shrinkage, which is so common in this type of box. There is a chip of wood missing off the left vertical post and through years of usage the lid is worn and no longer snaps down tight. Beyond that it is a beautiful box with outstanding patina.

If you collect Scandinavian folk art, Norwegian bentwood boxes, or primitive items, then this is a piece that you do not want to miss. You can buy with confidence from Sweetpea Cottage. We stand behind everything that we sell. If you wish to return your purchase for any reason, simply notify us by email of your intentions within 3 days of receiving the item. We then ask that you return it to us in its original condition in a timely fashion. Once we receive it then we will refund the full purchase price minus any shipping charges.
