Norwegian Tine / Tina, Paint Decorated Floral Design, Ca. 1900-1910

Sweetpea Cottage has located a terrific Norwegian tine. The box is solid and the lid fits down with an authoritative snap. One aspect of this box that separates it from most others is the fact that the flaps are joined with early staples rather than lacing. The bottom is attached to the sides with early brads. Both the lid and bottom show the wonderful marks of hand planing, a reminder of hand-made construction. The handle is a single piece of bent wood that is mortised through the lid and attached from the under side with more brads. It is decorated around the sides with a series of painted poppy flowers and the theme continues on the top with both flowers and buds. Additional decorative elements appear strategically placed along the top, handle, side posts and sides. The surface is protected under a coat of varnish which has served to slow the process of fading or loss. There are some areas of minor loss where the varnish has flaked off taking little bits of the painted design with it. Small areas of oxidation appear wherever the brads or staples have reacted with the wood. Still, the piece is in very good condition and the wear is consistent with the age of the box.

The box measures about 10 3/4 inches long and 4 3/4 inches wide. The lid is 12 1/4 inches long and 5 ½ inches wide. The box is 4 inches tall with the end locking posts 6 ½ inches high. It has a terrific golden brown patina that only comes with years of handling. The lid still closes with a sharp "snap" as was originally intended. Look closely at the photos and enlarge them using the Ruby Lane enlargement function. You will see how terrific this box is. It is difficult to date the box, but given the construction methods, it will probably date around 1900.
