Museum Quality Large Paint Decorated Norwegian Tina, Third Quarter 19th Century

Sweetpea Cottage has managed to obtain a very special Norwegian / Scandinavian tina or tine for your collection. This wonderful museum quality piece of folk art is unique because of its large size, but it is even more unique because of the paint decorated surface. If you collect Norwegian or Swedish folk art, tinas, tines, or svepasks, then you do not want to pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It measures 16 ½ inches long, 13 inches wide, and has a total height of 9 ½ inches. The height of the box portion alone is 8 inches. The top is keyed so that it will only fit on one way. The top and outsides are painted a dark olive green. On top of that base color there is a floral painted design that runs across the top and the front side of the piece. As is typical of heavily painted primitives of this age, the paint has chipped and lifted off in a number of places. The wear, however, is consistent with the age of the box. There is a hand-wrought handle on the top that is attached with clinched spread wires. The bottom is a single board that is surprisingly free from warping. The original nails that were used to attach the base are mostly gone and have been replaced with a series of small nails and brads from a variety of generations. The base is rabbeted so that part of it extends into the box for attachment and then about 1/4 inch is exposed below the box. This is an unusual method of making a bottom as they are usually cut to simply fit up inside the box. There are the usual types of damage for such an old and well used box – wood chips splintered off from the base, shrinkage of the bottom revealing open space between the bottom and sides, and a expertly done repair on the underside of the lid. The lacing is totally intact. The lid still fits well with a resounding snap. We have been collecting and dealing with old Scandinavian boxes for years, but have never encountered a box such as this. It is truly unique and impressive in its style and quality.
