Here is your chance to obtain a sweet painted tramp art tabletop sewing box with a padded cloth lid. It measures about 10 ½ inches tall, is about 11 1/4 inches wide at its widest point, and is about 7 ½ inches deep at its deepest point. The padded top lifts off revealing a storage area that is accessible from the top. The top set of porcelain drawer pulls are for a false front drawer. The lower set of drawer pulls are for a real drawer that will come out for storage. The box sits on legs that are made from two thread spools. The whole box is painted gold as was commonly done to similar boxes. Overall, the condition of the piece is quite good. There are two small areas of missing wood, both shown in photos. The largest of the two is about 1 inch long and is on the back where it is not obvious. The second one is on the left front base corner. It consists of a small piece of missing wood about 1/8 inch by 1/4 inch and is not obvious because of its small size. Many of the original tax stamps and identifying marks from the cigar boxes are visible inside and one bears a stamped date of 1895. We can not determine if the fabric on the top is original, but suspect that it is. It does not appear that the top was ever intended to be a hinged lid as is most common on boxes of this type. This wonderful piece is just a bit different from most tramp art boxes of this type and its quirky nature adds a quality all its own.
