Tramp Art Sewing Box, Dresser Box w/ Drawers, Post Civil War

Every once in a while you run into something that is just to good to pass up. That is the case with this wonderful piece of notched tramp art for your consideration. We are not exactly sure what it was originally intended to be, but our guess is either a sewing box or dresser box. Sitting on the top are two velvet cushions (possibly pin cushions) that appear to be original, both sitting in notched frames. On the front there are two small drawers also surrounded by notched frames, just the right size for storing small bits of detritus. (The drawer on the left has an age shadow inside where a key once sat.) The top is also hinged so that it will open up to reveal a shallow storage space. The bottom of the storage space is a wooden panel that will left out to reveal additional storage in the cabinet area where the drawers reside when closed. It measures 10 inches long, 4 3/4 inches deep and 4 inches tall. There are four delightful ebonized legs on the bottom that add an additional 1 inch to the height. We are able to date the box to approximately 1875 based on the cigar tax stamps which are still attached to the back and bottom. Overall, condition is consistent with age. The lid has a slight warp that prevents it from sitting tight on the top and one of the hinges has lost its throwpin with a small brad replacement. Inside the lid there is an illustrated ad pasted in that advertises "A purely vegetable medicine."

There are all sorts of tramp art boxes available in the antique world, but we doubt that you have ever seen one quite like this. It is a wonderful survivor that will stand out in a tramp are collection or when sitting on a desk or shelf. Look at the photos and you will see how great this box is. It will capture everybody's attention. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage. YOUR SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED.
