Sailor-Made Inlaid Civil War Era Ship’s Wall Box, Ca. 1860-1870

Sailor made items are highly collectible and document a time when sailors spent hours at sea with very little to do to fill their time. Many stunning pieces of folk art were created out of whatever materials were available on board ship. We are offering a unique piece of folk art made in that genre. This is a spectacular wall box, or wall pocket, created lovingly one piece at a time. Made from solid mahogany with inlaid strips of walnut and maple, on the front there is a set of initials "ASH" for somebody forgotten by time. On the sides there are patriotic American shields finely crafted and carefully inlaid complete with inked-on stars. Thematically the box suggests Civil War era, especially given the nature of the shields.

The box measures about 16 ½ inches long, 11 1/4 inches tall, and slightly over 7 inches deep. The condition is fabulous. There are a couple of paint drips on the surface in inconspicuous locations. The inlay is all present and intact. A small strip of wood inset in the front left might be a very early repair, but we suspect that it was original to the piece. The lower back of the piece looks as if it were intended to be open at one time where it would sit against a wall, but the space has been filled with a piece of mahogany that is clearly a later addition. The modification is in keeping with the piece and to most people would look to be original except when viewed from the back. A varnish finish has been applied to all surfaces with the exception of the back. A single screw hole is present for mounting on a wall. Many sailor-made items do not handle the ravages of time very well. This item is the clear exception.
