Folk Art Pennsylvania Dutch Straight Razor Case, 19th C.

Sweetpea Cottage has located a rare example of Pennsylvania Dutch, or Pennsylvania German, folk art that dates from the 19th century. We are offering you a chance to own a handmade straight razor case. While the body is made from a single solid block of wood, it is not exactly clear what the maker was intending with the shape, but it has a bit of a boat profile. There is a knob at each end. The "rear"end knob is anchoring a wooden washer that is stationary. The "front" end knob is attaching a heart-shaped piece of wood that is free to float. This knob also serves as the pivot point for the lid which slides forward and then pivots to the side. Once open, a storage compartment reveals a cut in the wood that is the size and shape of a straight razor. The knobs extend all the way through the piece and are anchored from the underside with circular pinned mortises. The most unusual component of the box is the traditional scratch design that has been cut into many of the surfaces. Incised along the top of the piece there are three tulips with vines and leaves. They are in the style of tulips that are often found painted on early Pennsylvania Dutch blanket chests. Along the edge of the top, the sides, the front and the back there are multiple semi-circular cuts that are set off with a linear element that runs the length of the piece. The surface is quite dark and appears to be walnut. It is difficult to say if a significant finish was ever applied. Now the piece shows years of grime and patina that make it special. There is insect damage, but it does not appear to be active anymore. For the collector of folk-art or Pennsylvania Dutch items, this is a unique and one-of-a-kind object. It has been extremely difficult to photograph in order to have the design show up because it is so dark. We have done what we could to help make the design obvious, but it has caused the photographs to artificially alter the color somewhat. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask!
