Sweetpea Cottage has located a beautiful piece of folk art. This carved whimsical water fowl, was obtained from a decoy collection on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, directly in the heart of Chesapeake Bay country. It stands about 6 ½ inches tall, 7 inches long, and 3 ½ inches wide. Gracefully carved from an unidentified wood that might be pine, it has been artistically painted with stylized feathers on the wings, an expressive face, and an overall rust brown background. It is most likely from the 1920's or 30's. There is wear to the painted surface that is consistent with age. A section of paint approximately 1 inch long and 1/4 inch wide has flaked off of the neck. There is also chipping of the paint around the base, probably from years of bumping around on a shelf or table. As one would expect with an old painted item such as this, there are lots of small areas of chipping distributed randomly over the whole piece. Age dirt and patina on the top of the bird has made it a little bit darker than the rest of the bird. Look closely at the photos and you will get a good sense of this beautiful piece. It is exactly as you would want a piece of polychrome folk art to be, used but not abused. This could be one of the highlights of your collection of American folk art, especially if you focus on waterfowl, decoys, or Eastern Shore memorabilia.
