We have managed to obtain a terrific souvenir of France. This is a hand made wooden jewelry box with a hinged lid. It is completely constructed from olive wood and beautifully paint decorated with floral designs. The item was crafted in Provence, France during the 1900's as part of a local cottage industry and sold as a souvenir of visits to France. It is about 6 1/4 inches long, 4 3/8 inches deep, and about 2 3/4 inches tall. Inside, both the box and the lid are lined with tufted, padded rose colored satin. On the outside lid there is a beautiful spray of wild flowers painted. This is a very pleasing little piece of folk art. Look at the photos carefully and you will notice the beautifully delicate nature of the piece and the fine artistry of the painted flowers. The whole piece has been top-coated with a layer of varnish that has protected the painting over the years and adds a marvelous tactile quality to the wood. The condition is generally good, but there is some minor loss of paint on some of the flowers on the lid. In addition, there is a crack that has developed at the right side of the lid. (See photos.) This has not impacted on the integrity of the box at all. It is still very sound and in beautiful condition. There is a clasp on the front used to close the lid. This looks to be original to the piece and still works fine. This is a beauty little item and would look terrific on display on your bookshelf, dresser, or sitting on a desk holding small incidents such as paper clips. If you ever wondered what happens to old olive trees when they die, will here is your answer. They continue to live on in beautifully crafted items such as this.
