We are offering a delightful hand-hammered Navajo spoon for your consideration. Highly desirable and very collectible, this spoon measures 4 7/8 inches long and the bowl is 15/16 inches wide. Made from heavy gauge silver, it is quite heavy for spoons of this type and was well made by a true artisan. This type of spoon was always made from ingot silver by the Navajo Indians (Dineh) of Arizona and New Mexico for the tourist trade at the turn of the last century, usually selling their wares at the Harvey Houses or railroad stations. They were never marked for silver content. The design elements are all hand-stamped into this spoon as was commonly done. The linear handle is stamped with a series of design elements that include an arrow along with a peyote bird. The bowl is stamped with a decorative element including a whirling logs motif, crossed arrows and another peyote bird. The rim of the bowl is stamped with a modified rainbow motif. Both the front and back of the spoon show the hammering and filing marks that should be present with an item such as this. The spoon is in excellent condition with none of the fatigue marks or cracks that are commonly associated with this type of item as a result of being over worked. It might have been polished at one time but that was long before we obtained it. It has a beautiful glowing patina that covers the whole piece. Overall, this spoon is a gem and priced well-below the going market for such unique pieces. This is guaranteed to be a true piece of Navajo folk art and not a knock off made by a commercial manufacturer which is what so many of the "Navajo spoons" are that are being sold today.
If you collect Navajo spoons then this spoon is for you. It is a nice elegant addition to your collection. If you do not collect these spoons then it is time to start. Their value is skyrocketing since the release of the book by Cindra Kline. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage. YOUR SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED.
