Hand-hammered Antique Native American Spoon w/ Large Whirling Logs & Snake Head Design
We are offering a marvelous hand-hammered antique Native American spoon for you to consider. Although the Navajo are usually associated with this type of spoon, in this case it is possible that it could be of Hopi origin because of the twisted handle and snake head design. This is a very desirable and highly collectible spoon. It measures 4 5/8 inches long and the bowl is 15/16 inches wide. It is heavy gauge silver and was well made by somebody who knew what he or she was doing. This type of spoon was always made from ingot silver by the Indians of Arizona and New Mexico for the tourist trade at the turn of the last century. They were never marked for silver content. The design elements are all stamped into the piece as was commonly done. The top of the handle has a snake head design with two eyes and an impressed whirling logs pattern. The handle had a well-executed barley twist that culminates in the bowl being stamped with a rather large whirling logs. The reverse side shows the hammering and filing marks that should be present with an item such as this. The spoon is in excellent condition with no metal fatigue cracks as are commonly found on old pieces of hammered silver. It has a beautiful glowing patina that covers the whole piece. Overall, this spoon is a gem and priced well-below the going market for such unique pieces.
If you collect Navajo spoons then this spoon is for you. It is a nice elegant addition to your collection. If you do not collect these spoons then it is time to start. Their value is skyrocketing since the release of the book by Cindra Kline. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage. YOUR SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED.
