Tambour / Roll Top Ladies Walnut Lap Desk 19th Century

Sweetpea Cottage has obtained a wonderful ladies lap desk with a roll top, or tambour, dating from the mid-to-late 19th Century. This desk is a wonderful, diminutive version of the classic sea captain's roll top lap desk and has been down-sized for a discriminating lady. When closed the desk is 13 inches wide, 9 ½ inches deep, and 5 5/8 inches to the highest point. When opened, it provides a writing surface that measures 11 ½ inches by 12 ½ inches. The drawer is fitted with a lock and key. The key does not appear to be original to the lock but it does open and close it. The key also functions as a knob to help pull open the drawer. When the drawer is pulled open it retracts the tambour above revealing the inner storage space and allows the writing surface to be opened up. The fabric on the writing surface is definitely original. While you might want to replace it with a new covering, it is most definitely usable as it is. There is a crack in the molding wood at the bottom of the drawer front. There is also a sliver of wood missing on one of the tambours. A floral decal is centered on the fold down writing surface and another decal is on the top of the gallery. The surface is varnished. We have cleaned it up and applied a thin coat of protective conservator's wax to help bring out the color and grain of the wood. The wood used in construction is walnut with secondary wood appearing to be pine. The tambour works smoothly. Overall, the desk is in better than average condition but it does show the signs of a life well used including minor scratches and scuffs.

What you purchase in this piece is a marvelous and unique piece of history. It works as it should and has survived the test of time. It would be a great display piece to set out on a shelf or table and enjoy. While tambour lap desks appear occasionally on the internet, they are seldom in this nice condition, nor are they of such a wonderful diminutive and useful size.
