20% Off! Ornate Inlaid Folk Art Hanging Mirror, Ca. 1875
We are not sure how to describe this wonderful wall mirror. We are referring to it as a piece of folk art because it was clearly assembled from pieces by somebody who wished to create a unique expression of their skills. It is large, measuring 19 5/8 inches high and 15 inches wide. The front shelf sits out a total of about 4 inches from the wall. It is made from a mixture of woods including walnut, mahogany, veneers, and satinwood inlays. In addition, there are accents made from inlaid brass. All of this is assembled against backing boards of pine. Inset into the middle is a small beveled mirror that measures 4 1/4 inches by 5 inches. Much of the silver is starting to shed off the back of the mirror. A solid mahogany board sits above the mirror as a display shelf. There is a second shelf below the mirror that has a railing attached with some metalwork that appears to be decorative German silver. The origin of the piece is a mystery but it gives the feeling of something that might be of European origin, possible Dutch or German. The condition is good. Some veneer is lifting slightly, some of the inlaid materials are pulling up, and it would benefit from a gently cleaning. We have left it the way we found it. The photos will never do this mirror justice. It is spectacular and makes a great statement when hanging on a wall. You will not be disappointed. It comes ready to hang with eyelets and a hanging wire.
