Collectors of Goberg love the novel hand-hammered items that infrequently surface on the market. Sweetpea Cottage is offering one of those very unique and highly sought-after pieces from the Jugendstil era. This is a candlestick matchbox holder of monumental proportions. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide during the early 1900's and Goberg or "Goberg Metallwareenfabrik" (Hugo Berger working as Goberg) is the premiere maker of iron work from that era.
The piece measures 12 inches from tabletop to the highest point and 10 3/4 inches from tabletop to the top of the bear's ears. It is 13 inches long from the front of the forward ski to the back of the back ski, and is 3 inches wide. The matchbox holder is decorated with two painted iconic shields that possibly correspond to a town or region in Germany. We cannot locate the identity of these shields, however. At the back of the bar that carries the matchbox holder and candlestick holder there is a hook. We have seen one similar piece that held a tray hanging from the hook which might have been used for spent matches. We do not know if that was ever the case with this item. We are also not sure of the role of the circle in the bear's nose and have never seen one with any use other that for decoration.
This item is in very good condition. The painted heraldic shields are showing signs of paint loss and the lip of the candlestick cup is slightly bent. Other than that, there are no other signs of damage anywhere. A wonderful patina of mild oxidation covers the whole item. Importantly, the piece is signed both "Goberg" and "Ges. Gesch." This is important because Goberg frequently failed to sign his pieces even though they were obviously his!
In the style of Jugendstil/Arts and Crafts, this is a fantastic and rare find, a "must have" piece for the avid Goberg collector. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage.
