Goberg Hand-Wrought Five Stick Candelabra, Jugendstil Era

Here is your chance to pick up a wonderful piece of Goberg hand-wrought ironwork. Hugo Berger, working as Goberg, in Germany during the early 1900's was the epitome of the Jugendstil artist, the German equivalent of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide.

This five stick candelabra is an example of one of Goberg's more frequently sought-after items and has become highly desirable over the years. While all Goberg candelabra's are rare, the five stick candelabra is much harder to come by than the three stick candelabra. This piece is quite heavy and is hand-crafted from hammered iron. In the center of the piece there is a delightful floral motif that culminates with a flower in full bloom. It stands 13 1/4 inches tall and is 12 inches wide. The circular base is 4 3/4 inches in diameter. The condition is quite good with all the metalwork being sound. Each candle cup is well attached but several of the bobeches are slightly bent, most likely the result of falling over at one time. We considered trying to reshape the bends to correct the damage but have decided to leave them as they are. The damage is part of the history of the piece and it does not detract in any way. In fact, we feel that they help to enhance the "Gothic" feel of the piece. There is some residual melted wax in some of the cups from use. There is still quite a bit of the original protective varnish covering the piece that Goberg often (but not always) used to slow oxidation. Because of that, there is great patina and minimal rust. On the bottom of the base there is a "Germany" stamp. While it lacks the Goberg stamp there is no question that this is a Goberg item. We have seen these candlesticks before and some were marked Goberg. He was well known for the inconsistency with which he marked his items. We have displayed it on our dining room table with candles in it and it looks stunning. You will be absolutely thrilled to call this piece your own.
