Goberg Gothic Iron Candlestick w/ Chained Snuffer, Signed, Painted Black, Ca. 1910

We are offering a signed Goberg hand wrought iron single candlestick with snuffer hanging from a chain. The piece is done in a very strong Gothic style with a castellated drip cup around the candle holder. The candlestick is 8 ½ inches tall and the round base is 4 3/4 inches in diameter. It is typical of Goberg's work consisting of different pieces of ironwork that were often hand hammered and then assembled into finished items. The surface of the piece has been covered with a layer of black paint and varnish. There is some very minor oxidation on the surface of the piece. The drip cup and candle cup have a couple of minor dings. The round base is hammered to have a slight ridged design. The piece has a wonderful look to it that will definitely attract attention and comments if displayed on a side board or table. It is signed with “Goberg” on the underside of the base. Goberg's work was never signed consistently the same way each time. Sometimes it was signed with "Germany", sometimes with "Goberg", and sometimes with nothing at all. This piece is definitely his and has all of the characteristics of Goberg items. We have sold pieces similar to this one over the years that were not signed. This particular example is possibly one of the finest examples that we have ever carried as inventory.

Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movements of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold through Liberty of London with pieces occasionally working their way to the U.S.
