Decorative Scandinavian/Northern European Painted Staved Tankard

This is one of the more unusual tankards that we have ever seen. Based on construction and form we believe that it may have Scandinavian or northern European origins. Regardless of where it is from, it is certainly a unique, one-of-a-kind item. The castellated rim around the top would certainly make it difficult to drink from. It is made with staved wood construction and has two forged iron bands holding the staves in place. A handle is integrated into one of the staves. A low form lid opens and closes pivoting on a wooden peg. The piece all looks original and is in sound condition. Usually items such as this become loose and lose their integrity as a resulting of the shrinkage of the staves. Although the staves have shrunk, the iron bands have dropped down slightly to still hold the piece tight. There are remnants of blue paint along with some white that might also have covered the surface at one time. The lid and bottom are made from quartersawn white oak and the staves appear to be birch. The tankard stands about 6 ½ inches tall and the base is about 4 7/8 inches in diameter. The lid is about 4 ½ inches in diameter. The only sign of damage that we can find occurs where a piece has broken off of the curved back on the upper part of the handle. There are no signs of insect activity. Overall, it is a wonderful decorative item that will start many conversations. You can make up a story of your own about why the top rim is castellated.

This is definitely a one-of-a-kind item that will looks absolutely fabulous on display. If you collect early primitives or just love unusual decorative items, then you will want to add this piece to your collection. It could be placed on your desk and used as a pencil or pen holder.
