Sailor Tray Inlaid w/Compass Rose & w/ Brass Handles, Ca 1840

Sweetpea Cottage is offering this very nicely crafted sailor's tray carefully made with inlays of many different woods forming a compass rose and a banded border. It is believed that pieces such as this were made by sailors during their off hours on long voyages, thus the name. This example has survived nicely through the years. We are not exactly sure of the woods that were used but suspect that most of the inlay is done with mahogany, walnut, cherry, and an unidentified lighter colored wood. A slightly raised rim runs completely around the outside edges adding a touch of visual interest. The field on the tray is mahogany that has a bit of a figured grain as seen in several of the photos. The tray is in good condition. There was some repair work done to some of the inlay but that appears to be a very long time ago. It was also probably refinished at the time that the inlay repairs were made. All of this was done so long ago, that it is now simply part of the history of the tray and has allowed it to develop a nice patina. There are cast brass handles at both of the ends. The underside is covered with the remnants of some early felt that has seen better days. The felt shows signs of insect damage but the damage does not extend into the wood of the tray. One piece of the lighter colored inlay has lifted a little bit at one corner but is still firmly attached to the substrate. If it bothers the new owner it could easily be glued down. We would not suggest that it should be done, however, since it is a very minor issue. The tray has a simple elegance to it that would make it a nice display piece for sitting on a table or even displayed on a wall. It would make a great card tray sitting on a table by the front door. This is definitely an item of which you will be proud.

The tray measures 11 inches by 17 inches. Measuring to the outside edges of the brass handles the longest dimension becomes 19 inches. The raised wooden edge of the tray stands 3/4 inch high. The brass handles extend above the bottom of the tray about 2 inches. Overall, this tray is an nice survivor of time, showing signs of wear and age, but at a level considerably less than what one would expect from an item such as this. Inlay work usually suffers greatly from loss and splitting as it ages. That is not so in this case. If artistry and aesthetics determine value, then this tray is well under the market price!
