20% Off! Folding Souvenir Alpine Carved Foot Stool, Beatenberg, Switzerland

Over the years we have handled many souvenirs of the Black Forest and Switzerland. This wonderful collapsible stool carries the characteristics of a well carved piece of Black Forest or Alpine ware. Carved across the face of the stool is the classic floral edelweiss design including a scroll carved with the name Beatenberg. Beatenberg is a town in the Interlaken region of Switzerland that is associated with the gateway to the Jungfrau and eagerly sought by nature lovers. The bench measures 11 ½ by 5 3/4 inches and stands up 5 inches. When folded up it is only about 1 3/4 inches tall. It is designed so that when the legs of the bench are extended a dowel drops into place in the legs that keeps them upright and separated so that the stool can be used. When the dowel is push up into a slot in the underside of the stool, then the legs can be collapsed. It is beautifully carved and is in excellent condition. The top shows some minor scuffing with one corner slightly dinged. One of the legs was split at one time but has been skillfully repaired so that it is hard to detect. The repair has strengthened the leg so that it is absolutely as strong, if not stronger, than it was originally. The hinges on the legs look to be original and are still sound. This is unlike any other souvenir that we have ever seen from the Alpine region or Black Forest. Besides being clever and useful, it is also beautiful.
