Free Shipping! Milk Painted China Red Pipe Box

This pipe box has been crafted in our artisan Sweetpea Cottage woodworking shop. It is based on a design found in early 18th century salt boxes. The crowning touch to this piece is the inverted heart that serves both as a decorative element and as the way of hanging the box on the wall. It is 15 inches high, 5 inches wide, and is 4 1/4 inches deep. It is made entirely out of solid hard wood that has been hand-planed, glued, and nailed, to duplicate the look of the antique original. The box has been decorated with traditional milk paint, carefully buffed to smooth the surface, treated with two coats of rub-on polyurethane, and finally topped with a protective layer of high quality furniture wax. At various steps along the way, the piece was distressed with dings, scrapes, scratches and wear marks, in order to duplicate years of heavy use. The background color is China red and highlighted with lines of marigold yellow. Keeping with tradition, at the bottom there is a small drawer that would have been originally used to hold loose tobacco. Imagine decorative dried flowers in the top section with your car keys safely stashed in the drawer. With time the milk paint will continue to develop a richer color and patina that is so sought after by antique collectors.
