Artisan Crafted Leopardwood Carved Owl Salt Box, Wall Box, w/Drawer

Whoooo would not love to have this wonderful salt box sitting on their desk? From the woodworking shop at Sweetpea Cottage, we are offering this modern interpretation of an antique salt box, or hanging wall box. Constructed like a piece of fine furniture, it is ready for you to use. Hang it on the wall, or place it on a desk. Use it to store all of your car keys, rolls of loose stamps, or as a dresser box for tie-tacks and cuff-links. The uses are limitless for this handy little box.

Based on a design found in early American salt boxes, this box has the classic folk art fan-tail handle for hanging on the wall and a hand carved owl head sits on the lid. As an added bonus there is a small drawer with a brass pull. Both spaces are excellent for storing odds and ends. The maximum height is 7 3/4 inches tall with the actual box being 5 inches tall. It is 6 ½ inches wide and 5 5/8 inches deep. It is made entirely out of solid leopardwood (also known as Brazilian lacewood) a rare and exotic wood that is known for its stunning grain pattern which seems to shimmer and ripple. Leopardwood is also known for the difficulty associated with trying to work with it because of its hardness and brittle nature. Construction is all by hand with the lid hinged on cherry dowels. The only piece of metal on this box is the solid brass knob on the drawer. Even the carved owl on the lid was hand carved at Sweetpea Cottage. The grain pattern in the leopardwood seems to resemble feathers on the owl. The box has been carefully finished with an oil/ varnish finish and then buffed to a high sheen with a fine carnuba wax. The spectacular nature of the wood makes this item a box to behold. This salt box has many, many uses and is destined to become a family heirloom.
