Early 1900s Decorated Leather Photo Album Native American Tourist Souvenir
This album measures 5 inches wide by 6-1/2 inches long. If you squeeze it together it is about 1/2 inch thick.
The outside cover(S) are leather. The back cover is darker color, has more texture and overlaps the front brown cover. It's cut to look like an envelope and a great string tie goes through the entire piece, with a bow on top. The covers are securely fastened, NO rips or tears. There are a few spots and slight stains on the BACK cover, but the FRONT cover looks really good.
On the front cover is stamped Snap Shots Lake George, N.Y. There is also a deco looking pattern stamped into the leather around the edges. The scene on the cover is hand painted and appears to have been done in artist oil paints. An Indian teepee sits beside a lake under tall pine trees. A full moon lights the night sky.
INSIDE, the black photo pages are completely unused. They are the soft feeling black paper used so widely for photo albums. Inside both covers and on the pages facing the covers is just a little bit of spotting, nothing worse. NO rips, tears, creases, corner bumps or torn out pages.
What a really nice example of souvenirs produced for the tourist trade in New York's mountains. A wonderful Adirondack lodge type piece. We do not know if this may have been made by a Native American. Many pieces like this were made by locals.
