This stunning big service plate is from the Missouri Kansas & Texas Railroad ( "Katy" Lines ) in the pattern called "Alamo Blue Service". A full 10-1/2 inches across, it features a gorgeously intricate rust-brown portrait of the San Antonio mission that was so important not only to the state of Texas, but in American and Mexican history. A richest and deepest cobalt blue band surrounds the rim.
CONDITION is Near Mint with absolutely NO cracks, chips, flakes, crazing or repairs. You MUST tilt it in bright light to see any possible surface marks. We were able to find only a very few.
According to "The Official Guide to Railroad Dining Car China" (McIntyre) this pattern, along with a similar one with a pale green rim band, were produced "to commemorate the Texas Centennial in 1936 . . . . The borders matched the interiors of the Katy dining cars and blended beautifully with the colors in the Bluebonnet pattern."
Many of these plates carried a railway backstamp that read : "Made especially for MK&T RR" along with a Buffalo China "Ye Old Ivory" back mark, but many others did not.
The only thing we can fault about this plate is that it does not have the full railroad backmark.
