Here are four railroad employee books from the Pennsylvania Railroad. All date from the very earliest 1900s. THREE are instructions, regulations and rules; the fourth is an update/insert that was to be mounted inside an existing book, providing updated information.
CONDITION is extremely nice for their age - NO missing pages, NO writing on them. The two with composition covers look like they were never used. The two soft covers have "desk drawer grunge" on the outsides with light edge damage.
SIZE - all are 6-3/4 inches tall by 4 inches wide.
(1) Darkest red/brown cover - THE AIR BRAKE AND TRAIN AIR SIGNAL INSTRUCTIONS. Dated 1908. Complete with original tissue paper diagram folded inside the back cover, which looks like it has never been unfolded! Three original staples as bright and tight as new.
(2) Tan with brown tape down spine - SPECIAL RULES Taking Effect May 6, 1907 Pennsylvania Railroad - Erie Division, Sunbury and Lewistown Divisions, Northern Central Railway, Shamokin Division. Extremely nice, looks like it's never been used. Three original staples as bright and tight as new.
(3) Grayish Paper Cover - REGULATIONS - THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD VOLUNTARY RELIEF DEPARTMENT - Taking effect February 1, 1886 - the covers are a bit grunged up but inside pages are in terrific condition, only age darkened a bit with light corner bumps. NO stains, NO writing, NO tears on inside pages. There is a small tear at the bottom front of outside cover, and the back outside cover is edge damaged on the bottom. Two inside staples as bright and tight as new.
(4) THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD VOLUNTARY RELIEF DEPARTMENT - this is an INSERT that was supposed to be pasted into an existing booklet. The instruction along the side of the outside page says "Paste this on page 3 of the book of Regulations with Certificate of Membership." On the back outside page (the outside pages really are not true "covers"), you can see the glue strip that was never used. Pages have darkened with age but NO stains and NO writing. There are only 16 pages, two inside staples are bright and tight as new. This has been folded lightly across the middle and then very lightly up and down. (It should press out flat if carefully ironed.)
A wonderful addition to any collection of railway employee worker instruction books, especially for a Pennsy collector.
