TWO Large Blue Currier & Ives Royal China Mugs: RARE MAKER/PATTERN MARKED, Straight Sided
Each holds a generous 10 ounces and is 2-5/8 inches tall and 3-7/8 inches across.
The name "Fashionable Turnouts" imaginatively depicts an apparently wealthy lady being driven in a carriage behind a team of crack trotting horses by a top-hatted driver. Her uniformed footman is seated behind her. Back in the day, a "turnout" was one's horse and vehicle.
Both cups are in lovely condition with crisp blue artwork on white base china, with NO cracks, chips, flakes, crazing or repairs. There are some very slight, expected signs of use on the bottom rims.
We found these oversized cups for sale in several online stores for $35.00 each but are happy to offer them to you at a much lower price -- with 100% satisfaction guaranteed!
BACKGROUND: The Royal China Company introduced Currier & Ives Dinnerware in 1950. It was an immediate success. At that time, Early American décor was enjoying a revival -- and the Currier & Ives dinnerware fit right in. The designs are a combination of C&I prints or parts of prints along with the famous scrolled border designed by Gordon Parker, Art Director at Royal. The basic dinnerware was offered as a premium at A&P groceries with additional pieces for sale or redeemed for coupons or stamps. Later it was also sold at department stores. It was produced until 1970 when Jeannette discontinued it as too old-fashioned. However, it was brought back in the mid-seventies and production continued until Royal closed in 1986.
