Northern Pacific RR Dining Car Waiter's Book - Unusual Ephemera!
These meal checks apparently were intended for use by employees. Near the top of each is stated:
CHECK FOR MEALS SERVED TO DINING CAR CREW ONLY / EMPLOYEES WILL PLEASE WRITE ORDER ON SEPARATE CHECKS AND SIGN NAME THERETO
The pad of checks is 6-3/4 inches long, and 1/2 inch thick. The checks are individually numbered from 44001 through 44050, stapled by the printing company to a backing of lightweight cardboard. They are printed in duplicate: an original and a second sheet for a copy. A sheet of carbon paper for creating the duplicates is still in place, intact in the bottom of the pad.
A look at the 6-24 printing code to the right of the NPRR "Monad" logo at the top would suggest they were printed in June, 1924. We will suggest that the number 3106 is either a RR form number or possibly a code for the total number of pads created.
"Ephemera" is defined as paper items that were originally intended to be discarded after use, but instead have become collectible. This waiter's pad is a perfect example!
