Early 1900s Rock Island Railroad "Golden State" China Butter Pat

Here is a beautiful little china butter pat from the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, also known as the "Rock Island Lines" or CRI&PRR. It is in the sought-after Golden State pattern, with oranges surrounded by green leaves and an appealing floral border, inside a green rim stripe.

This tiny plate is approximately 3 inches across. It is in excellent condition with clear, detailed transfer artwork. There are NO cracks, chips, flakes, hairlines, crazing or repairs. There are a few little sprinklings of age darkening, and on the very bottom rim is some light discoloration (which does not show for display). We do NOT try to remove any yellowing with bleach (or anything else), as this will cause long-term damage to old glaze.

The maker of this piece is OPCO/Syracuse China and we can date its manufacture to sometime during the "19-teens" by the impressed mark on the bottom. Inside a diamond, a numeral appears (but we cannot read it). Syracuse China used the impressed diamond/numeral date coding system only between January, 1912 and June, 1919. After that, a letter/number code was adopted. The other distinct feature pointing to Syracuse is the concentric rings around the bottom, present in old Syracuse China molds.

Other makers of this pattern for the Rock Island were the Bauscher, Buffalo China and Shenango China companies.

Luckin ("Dining on Rails") gives this pattern a 3, and McIntyre ("Official Guide to Railroad Dining Car China") gives it a 3+ , out of a possible "5" rarity/desirability rating.

This little butter pat would be an absolute star in any collection of RR passenger dining car items.

COLLECTOR NOTE: The Southern Pacific also ordered and used a virtually identical pattern, also called "Golden State." However, ONLY Bauscher and Maddock manufactured it for the SPRR. Because our butter pat is identifiable as Syracuse China, it must be Rock Island.
