This rare, vintage half doll was made by "Lilli" R&L Baitz; a prestigious manufacturer working in Berlin Germany pre-war. For her age, she is in very good condition with only a minute blemish under her chin and a flea bite of missing composite over her eye. She still retains the maker's original seal and crepe paper attached to her chest. She is adorned with her original bouffant, platinum, mohair wig styled with soft waves and tendrils. Over the years, the right side has loosened a bit from the sheets of fine paper once holding it secure. Her beautifully sculpted composition face features a elegant narrow nose, sultry brown eyes and ruby red, bee-stung lips. Her graceful, porcelain arms and hands are attached to her shoulders with wire and are in excellent condition with no chips or breakage. Her bust rests upon a large, wire cage and at one point could have been a lamp. Fashionable dressed in the original, raspberry satin gown accented with French lace and matching sash, there was a time when she would have been the "Belle" of the ball but unfortunately today the dress is quite fragile and is frayed and torn in many places. She stands an impressive 19 inches and with the exception of the blemishes mentioned above, this rare, Baitz doll is in excellent, vintage condition.
Lilli Baitz was a talented sculptor and was the sculptor for the only known doll produced of actress Mary Pickford. Lilli and Roman Baitz started their arts and crafts business together in 1909 and by 1914 were creating dolls. Roman Baitz died earlier than his wife who continued to run the business. In 1938 the Baitz business and property was confiscated due to WWII and sadly, in 1942 Lilli Baitz committed suicide to escape capture. More information about Lilli Baitz, her dolls and company can be found in the books, "The Half Doll" Vol. 1 and 6 by Shona & Marc Lorrin.
