Antique French Limoges Enamel on Copper Miniature Portrait Plaque in an Ornate Gilt Bronze Frame
An antique French 19th century Limoges hand painted enamel on copper miniature portrait plaque set in an ornate gilt bronze frame. The frame bordered by a frieze comprising of neoclassical ornamentation including acanthus leaves and topped by a lavish finial in the form of a ribbon knot bow flanked by sprigs of flowers.
The enameled portrait itself is beautifully done, depicting a delightful scene of a lady with a lovely cheerful face, carrying a basket of pink roses on a summer evening in the country. Bright and vivid coloration to this enameled plaque, especially to her fuchsia pink cape and to the vibrant sunset background. Enamel atop of thin gold or silver foil provides a shimmering metallic effect to the flowers adorning her white gown and to the background behind her. The artist/enamelist achieved every bit of detail in this portrait, from the lady's features, to the folds and shadows in her clothing and to the wildflowers and foliate of the exquisite pastoral scenery. Signed A. Legrand. There is a metal easel on the back for table top display as well as a small loop for hanging display. The condition is good considering its age, there is a hairline to the enamel located in the upper left corner. The fabric matting covering the back of the frame shows wear from age. Frame measures 7 1/2" tall x 4 3/4" wide, portrait measures 5 1/2" x 3 3/4".
