Antique Silver Mounted Faux Tortoiseshell Card Case, Castle
This lovely antique card case is a superb example of the cases used to house visiting cards, also known as calling cards. A major part of Victorian etiquette, the use of visiting/calling cards were met by strict rules. If one wanted to 'call' upon another at their home, unless previously invited or introduced, he would leave his calling card first. Then would have to wait at home for a response. If welcomed to visit, he would receive a calling card in return. However, if unwelcome, a subtle rejection would arrive in the form of no forthcoming card. These calling cards were beautiful, featuring colorful heraldry, embossed lettering and lavish ornamentation. Their cases were miniature works of art, highly decorated card cases crafted of such materials as sterling silver, tortoiseshell, mother of pearl, and papier mache.
