A lovely antique French pink opaline glass and ormolu watch holder display vitrine. The body is of pink hortensia opaline glass, also known as 'gorge de pigeon' (French for pigeon's throat) and rose hortensia. The glass is a lovely pink color, with a nacreous luster or fiery opalescence and was produced c.1820-1835, making this type of glass rare and sought after. A prong-set glass door cut with a thick beveled edge opens to reveal a gilded and tufted fabric lined floral form watch holder. This piece is unique in that when the glass door is opened, the watch holder slides out, and reverses back into the stand when the door is closed, a rare mechanism. Embellished by gilt ormolu mounts with bamboo decoration. In good antique condition, with no chips or cracks. Measures approx. 6" tall. The pocket watch shown in the photos is not included.
