A marvelous 19th century French gilt bronze jewelry box housing a beautiful miniature portrait hand painted surrounded by a porcelain plaque of Sevres quality. Such a superb example of these fine old portrait boxes.
Centered on the top lid is a miniature portrait depicting Marie Antoinette from Vigée-le-Brun's 1785 portrait titled "Marie-Antoinette à la rose" This miniature of the French queen is masterfully painted, with tiny minute brushstrokes and bright, vivid colors. Encased under convex glass and bears the signature of Jomel or similar.
A large porcelain plaque surrounds the portrait, hand painted with charming floral arrangements of pink, yellow and white.
The entire box is decorated in neoclassical motifs, including a border of Acanthus leaves trimmed by minute beading as well as a frieze of ornate foliate and scrolls. Simply beautiful and masterfully done! Stands on four feet and the lid opens to reveal a colorful brocaded silk-like interior.
Condition: In very good condition. Working lock and key. Portrait measures 3 3/4" in diameter. The box measures 8 1/8" square and approximately 3" in height.
