Antique French Hand Painted Miniature Portrait of Emperor Napoleon I, Ornate Crown Gilt Bronze Frame
Antique 19th century French hand painted miniature portrait depicting Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte I, housed under glass in an ornate gilt ormolu bronze frame. The miniature is an artist's rendering after Baron Francois Pascal Simon Gerard's portrait of Napoleon I (1769-1821) in Front of the Chateau de Malmaison, (Napoléon Ier devant le château de Malmaison) currently displayed at the Musée national du château de Malmaison in Rueil-Malmaison. Signed M. Demonsceaux, the artistry is outstanding, the portrait painted in exquisite detail using fine brush strokes of vibrant colors. Housed under convex glass and encased in an ornate ormolu frame, embellished in neoclassical decoration the includes an intricate scrolling floral garland frieze, and topped by an impressive finial in the form of a crown above a ribbon knot bow. Has a hinged metal easel for tabletop display as well as a loop ring for hanging. In good overall antique condition- having some gilt wear to the frame and there are a couple of hairline splits to the top and bottom edge of the portrait visible in the photos. Frame measures 7 1/8" x 4 7/8", Portrait measures 5 3/8" x 3 7/8".
