WMF Early Art Deco Cigarette Case Sports Theme - c. 1910 -1920, Germany

WMF case decorated with figures in early 1900's sports attire playing ball outdoors. It is marked on the lower edge with a WMF beehive mark, the version with a clear top introduced in 1910 for the French market. WMF stands for W√úRTTEMBERGISCHE METALLWARENFABRIK, was founded in 1880 in Germany, and around 1900 produced a wide range of silver-plated articles, mostly in the Jugendstil ( Art Nouveau ) style. WMF's golden age was brief as it lost its export markets in 1914 with the start of World War I. Early WMF pieces are uncommon and highly sought after.
