Antique Needlework Sampler for Sale Mary Tindalls Dated 1800 Excellent!
Extraordinary sampler made in the year 1800 by Mary Tindalls. Its execution is impeccable, with tiny motifs organized in a very structured, evenly spaced manner. It includes the upper and lower case alphabets, numbers, a pious verse, a row of five crowns, the makers name and date it was made, all separated by finely embroidered bands of different stitches. The fact that crowns are the only pictorial element present, added to the tiny stitching and overall formality of its composition, leads one to believe it may be English. There is also mention of the five crowns in the Bible, as symbols of the rewards promised to believers. So the crowns could also have a religious connotation, a complement to the pious verse. The name Mary Tindalls (and similar spellings such as Tindal, Tindall, Tindale) can be found in England as well as in America. The highly skilled workmanship of this sampler appears to be that of an older girl, perhaps about thirteen, the average age at which girls made more elaborate samplers. Working backwards, we estimate that Mary Tindalls must have been born around 1787 give or take a year or two. In very good used condition with minor imperfections as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
