Oval Folding Table Pennsylvania Dutch Double Headed Eagle Black Gold - 20th Century, USA

Decorative and practical folding table decorated with a double headed eagle surrounded by tulips painted in gilt over ebonized wood. A traditional Pennsylvania Dutch Hex design, the double headed eagle represents strength and courage. The table has an ingenious folding system that makes it very compact when folded and easy to store. It is marked on the underside with the manufacturer's label Howe, New York and the early HOWE slogan: "IF IT FOLDS, ASK HOWE". The Howe company was founded in the 1920's in Connecticut and has an interesting history. In the 1930's the Waldorf Astoria Hotel commissioned Howe to come up with a design for banquet folding tables. During WWII Howe was chosen to design Victory folding tables for submarines because of their space saving qualities. In fact, the Japanese surrender is said to have been signed on a Howe table. In good used condition with paint loss and imperfections as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.

Measurements: Oval surface: 24.5" wide by 17 5/8" deep by 19.5" tall approximately; Folded: 2.75" wide.
