Miniature Portrait Painting on Porcelain of Madame Recamier after Francois Gerard

Miniature portrait on oval porcelain plaque of famous Paris socialite Madame Recamier after the painting by French neoclassical painter François Gerard (1770-1837). Born Jeanne François Julie Adélaïde Bernard in Lyon, Mme. Recamier became a symbol of post revolution social mobility and one of the most admired women of her time. At 16 she married an older man, a 43 year old Paris banker and financier of Napoleon Bonaparte. She held a literary salon in her Paris mansion and it is said that writers such as Chateaubriand fell madly in love with her. Prince August of Prussia proposed but she remained with her, by then, elderly and impoverished husband. She gave Prince August her portrait by Gerard instead. The painting was returned to Madame Recamier after the Prince's death, in accordance with his will. This miniature portrait plaque comes in a beautiful, fine, antique French gilt bronze Neoclassical style frame decorated with figural leaf sprays and ribbons. The frame has both an easel stand and a ring for table, wall or cabinet display. Oval porcelain plaque is signed on center right border, illegible. Unexamined outside of the frame. In very good used condition with minor imperfections as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.

Measurements: Frame: 4.3" by 2.9"(10.8 cm by 7.3 cm): Visible Image Oval: 1.9 by 1.5"(4.8 cm by 3.8 cm) approximately.
