Charming Victorian era 14K gold brooch (unmarked but acid tested by my jeweler) features a small Pinscher type dog in reverse carved and painted rock crystal or what is commonly known as Essex crystal. The brooch is 2 5/8" long (6.7 cm) and measures 3/4" across the center.(2 cm) There is an older C style clasp. The metal has a hint of pink or rose which is also typical of much Victorian gold jewelry. The back of the crystal is open. There is some silvering of the crystal which is not unusual to find in a piece of this age, along with a small scratch in the glass on the inside of the crystal that is less than one mm in size. The design of the brooch includes fine beading on the vertical bars and raised rounded details on three of the ends as well as on the middle bar. I note that there is one bar that is missing this additional detail. The pin stem is slightly bent but closes securely and there are some areas of slight wear to the gold metal. Total weight of brooch is 11.2 gm. Please see photos for further information as this is an important part of the description. This charming piece is well over 100 years old and does show signs of wear as mentioned, with price reflecting this. Please email with any questions, and thanks for visiting Splendors of the Past on Ruby Lane.
