Large Antique Moss Agate Sterling Silver Brooch
This exquisite moss agate brooch dates from the late nineteenth or very early twentieth century. The setting is not marked but tests as sterling and has a modified C-clasp. The nicely patinated mount is very delicate looking and includes a fine twisted rope bottom edge and openwork teeth surrounding the oval stone. The agate has a slightly domed and beautifully polished top. The background is a creamy white-gray with wispy dark colored moss. The stone is open backed and has a wonderful translucent glow and fascinating depth and the effect is reminiscent of a walk though a meadow or forest on a misty morning. The brooch is large, measuring 2 1/4" by 1 5/8". In excellent condition, it is exceptionally lovely!
