These were a very functional part of life back in the 40's before the use of scotch tape and such. No one wanted an ugly ball of string lying around so that is how the stringholders came to be in vogue. The ball of string hid behind the figure, in this case the apple, and there was a hole for the string to come out of -- snip snip with the scissors and you could wrap that package right up. This string holder measures a bit over 8 " tall and around 6" wide. I took this down from the Hoosier cabinet at my Mom's house just this summer and she still had it in use. This has paint wear which is normal and a couple of chips -- chalk is so fragile, but it displays nicely and is a wonderful vintage piece from when people never wasted anything -- even string.
