A wonderful Victorian book box made from Coromandel, these would have been filled with a bank of leather-bound housekeeping books for Journals.
This example is made from exotic Coromandel wood and beautifully brass bound with gothic cast brass straps, with a matching large brass escutcheon to the front which houses the working key.
The key opens the heavy reticulated brass clasp to the top. The interior is finished in a deep blue leather lining and the base is sprung .. this would allow the books to be pressed down, the clasp shut and locked creating a tight fitting. The interior of the clasp is signed by the top notch London manufacturer & retailer "Howell James & Co, Regent St. London".
Excellent condition with exterior measurements: 7 3/8" x 2 3/4" x 4 3/4" tall, the interior measuring 6 1/4" x 1 3/4" and around 3 1/4" deep.
