Hudson River style circa 1880 primitive American landscape painting original gilt frame
This is a late 19th century American painting by an anonymous artist, from the heart of the Victorian age. It measures 16" by 24" on the original stretchers (21 1/4" by 30" including the frame and probably original red velvet liner). The peaceful scene includes a lake with eight ducks in the foreground, a shore in the foreground, two rowboats at right, a quaintly undersized man and woman in Victorian garb at left, overhanging dark trees, a small waterfall emanating from a mill, and distant low mountains. All in all it is absolutely typical of American painting at the time. Over the 125 or so years since its creation it has acquired a lot of dirt, a 1 1/4" puncture in the sky, and a 4" vertical tear at left. The frame is the classic lemon-gilt of the time. It is in better than average shape with some losses at upper left and upper right. Just the frames like this can easily sell for over $300 back in the eastern states.
