DAVID ROBERTS **PAIR** of 19th century orientalist art subject matter prints
TWO lithograph prints with hand coloring, one titled "Interior of Greek Church of the Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem April 11, 1839", the other "Citadel of Jerusalem without the walls", by noted English artist and Middle Eastern traveler DAVID ROBERTS (1796-1864). The first measures 14 1/4" by 19 1/2" (24" by 28 1/2" as framed); the second measures 9 1/2" by 12 3/4" (18" by 20 1/4" as framed). Roberts is best known for his lithographed images of sites in the classical Middle East, of which these are typical examples. The larger one has age browning overall and foxing and fading at bottom quarter of the image; the smaller one is showing age toning but not the foxing. The smaller one needs a new mat, while the frame on the larger one has a few losses. See the net for much more on Roberts' importance in recording scenes of the Holy Land before the advent of photography. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
