CHARLES B. BIGELOW (1860-1924) nineteenth century American art watercolor painting of French chateau

Watercolor on paper, 13 1/2" by 7 7/8" (22" by 15" as framed), signed at lower right "C.B. Bigelow", undated but probably circa turn of the century to as late as 1920. The artist is somewhat obscure; he appears in Davenport's with an 1860 birth date, born in Buffalo, NY and died in Illinois in 1924. I believe that some of his information has been hopelessly intertwined with that of a Charles C. Bigelow (1891-1963). This is a watercolor of a French chateau in the famed Loire Valley, and the drawing is inscribed "Chateau Azay le Rideau pres Chinon France" at lower left. I dug a bit further on the net and found that the artist exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1894. In the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, online now, is an image of an 1891 letter to Mr. Bigelow from none other than James McNeil Whistler! So Bigelow must have been considered a competent artist who evidently moved in the highest circles of the profession. The drawing is evenly browned consistent with age, with two foxing spots in the sky. This drawing should certainly appeal to the Francophiles out there. **Allow for annoying glass reflections in photos** .
