Oil on masonite impressionist mountain landscape, 24" by 30", unframed, signed at lower right by artist EVERETTE H. SLOAN. This is a painting in the tradition of the great early 20th century New Mexican art of the Southwest.....the yellow aspen, the massive mountains, the colors. The mountain ridges, especially, remind me of the work of Taos artist Victor Higgins. I recently researched the artist online and found the grandson of the artist, living in Oregon. The grandson, John, shared with me some interesting information about his artist grandfather, who died at the age of 77. Sloan was born in New Mexico and moved to Salem, Oregon where he worked in the commercial sign business. He shared some of his artistic knowledge with his grandson as late as the late 1970's. Starting around the late 1950's Everette began to travel a more or less set route through the west with his grandson, including the states of Oregon, California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana and Idaho, selling paintings to an established clientele along that route. He would collect moneys owed for paintings left off the previous year, and painted new works along the route. On the reverse, inside a drawn palette, is written, by the artist: "Painted on the spot near Cowles, New Mexico/IF YOU EVER GO THERE--REMEMBER THE ARTIST TO MR JAKE GREEN---MANAGER OF THE STORE IN 1961". I googled that name and, interestingly, found an online obituary of the gentleman, from 2002, including his photo. This Mr. Green was originally from South Carolina, but spent considerable time in New Mexico. That inscription helps us to date the painting. The painting is unframed currently. It is a little dusty and there are a few minor paint losses (ask for details of this), but the paint is NOT unstable. I think cleaned and varnished and framed, this will really take off. Note the deer in the composition. I wonder if the Museum of New Mexico has anything in its files on the artist. Cowles is in the Sandia mountains east of Santa Fe.
