This is a fine modern work by a major artist from 20th century Turkey, BEDRI RAHMI EYUBOGLU (1913-1975). Executed in gouache on paper laid on board, (likely laid on the board by the artist himself, when this was created), the painting itself measures 19 1/2" by 19 1/8" (49.5 cm. by 48.5 cm.). It is signed "B. Rahmi" at lower right and dated 1956, and on the back of the board is further writing, likely by the artist himself. The work is intensely modern, with semi abstract imagery that to my eye borrows from classic Byzantine mosaic images I've seen. Note the mother/child image, but it's difficult to try to interpret the rest. In Turkey, the artist is considered a major figure and his works are widely exhibited. Whereas the market for Eyuboglu's works was formerly pretty much in Turkey, the recent resurgence in interest in Middle Eastern and Turkish modern art has resulted in Sotheby's London now holding specialized sales dedicated solely to Turkish art. The artist's works have sold to the $30,000 area at these auctions in just the past few years, and continue to sell well at auction in Istanbul and Ankara. Search google for MUCH biographical information on the artist, (much of it in Turkish). He was a painter, teacher and art critic, and an accomplished, nationally recognized poet. His literary works continue to be printed in Turkey. The artist was in Paris for the first time in 1930, where he studied with Andre Lhote. He also claimed a special affinity for the works of Raoul Dufy and Matisse. In later decades he continued to travel to Western Europe, where he completed mural projects for NATO in Brussels, and other projects in other major cities. For two years in the early 1960's he was in the USA. SHIPPING NOTICE: Unfortunately, due to very serious customs issues I encountered when I attempted to send this to Istanbul by Fedex, I regret that I cannot again ship this painting to Turkey. CONDITION: As the work is gouache on thin paper barely more sturdy than tissue paper, it is delicate. There is some paint loss in the green area presently. It does not compromise the vitality of the image but should probably be stabilized by the next owner. The heavy board to which the work was affixed has over the years acquired a concave shape, possibly causing or at least contributing to some of those losses.
