For the aviation or jetliner enthusiast, TWO gouache or tempera aviation-themed paintings on artboard, each 11" by 8 1/8" (16" by 18 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right in each case "C.G. Hodgson". One painting is of a Lockheed L-1011 jetliner flying over rugged, snowy mountains; the other, a missile fired from a submarine just breaking the surface of the sea. I searched the internet for the artist and found another drawing of an historic old Lockheed plane. Another reference showed the artist's first name to be "Chuck". The Lockheed jet would date this to the very late 1960's or early 1970's. Both drawings are in superb, fresh, clean condition. The artist's daughter has kindly provided me with more information about her father, who was born in Bisbee, Arizona in 1929. He spent most of his childhood in Pasadena, went to Pasadena City College and then graduated from Art Center. Hodgson worked in the art department at Lockheed for 30 years and obviously did many aviation paintings in that time. In the early 1980's he was commissioned by the US Postal Service to design several air mail stamps. In addition, he painted in his studio at home and sold his paintings through various galleries. One of his paintings hangs in the Guggenheim Museum and another in the Taj Mahal in India. Hodgson passed away in 2005, leaving a legacy in the field of aviation and aerospace art.
